Guinevere Kauffmann

Guinevere Alice Mei -Ing Kauffmann ( born 1968 in California) is an American astrophysicist at the Max Planck Institute for Astrophysics in Garching.

Kauffmann studied at the University of Cape Town and completed her studies with a Master of Science degree in astronomy. She received her PhD in 1993 in Astrophysics at the University of Cambridge. Your promotion focused on the formation and evolution of galaxies. You hereby developed a model that was the first time to put forwarded by large telescopes images of young galaxies in direct comparison with a computer simulation of galaxy evolution. According to this model it has developed similar models for use in black holes, dark matter and quasars at the Max Planck Institute for Astrophysics. Since 1996 she has been working at this institute, where she held the status of a C3 - group leader since 2003. Since 2013 she has been Director at the MPI for Astrophysics.

Her research focus is the investigation of the relationship between the theoretical models of structure formation in the Universe and the properties of the observed luminous galaxies.
