Gulf of Corryvreckan

The road from Corryvreckan, also Gulf of Corryvreckan, from Gaelic Coire Bhreacain is a strait in Scotland. It runs north of the Hebridean island of Jura and separates them from the neighboring island Scarba. The name means roughly boiler of the spotted sea. The distillery Ardbeg publishes a whiskey bottling named Corryvreckan.

The road from Corryvreckan runs with a length of a few kilometers in east-west direction and is next to the Luing Sound one of the two major outflows of the Jura to the north; they Sund is relatively narrow and has at its narrowest point, a width of approximately one kilometer.

Corryvreckan Swirl

The Corryvreckan Swirl is located in the Strait of Corryvreckan and one of the world according to the vortex areas Moskenstraumen and Saltstraumen between the Norwegian Lofoten Islands, the Old Sow in Canada the strongest swirls. The formation of this vortex is due to the topographical conditions. At the onset of flood water flows from the south through the Jura Sound, where it can flow only through a few straits in the north. The resulting high pressure causes water in the Strait of Corryvreckan a strong flow to the west of about eight knots ( 14.5 km / h). From the bottom of the strait from a depth of about 200 m pyamidenförmiger a rock to about 28 m below the sea surface grows. The fast flow on both sides of and above this rock causes the formation of the vortex. This caused loud noises that are audible for miles. They are to hear about an hour after low tide is best. If the outflowing water masses to the west opposed a strong westerly wind at high tide, so up to five meters high waves pile up. This natural phenomenon is known as the Great Race. At the onset of low tide, the currents run in the opposite direction.
