Gulkevichi

Gulkewitschi (Russian Гулькевичи ) is a town with 35 244 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010 ) in the Krasnodar region in southern Russia.

Location

Gulkewitschi is located in the Caucasus foothills in the eastern part of the Krasnodar region, about 150 kilometers from the capital city of Krasnodar. It is situated near the left bank of the Kuban River. The nearest town is located 20 km north-west of Gulkewitschi lying Kropotkin.

History

Though founded in the city is 1875, when the railway line from Rostov -on-Don was opened to Vladikavkaz, was first applied to the Gulkewitschi as station settlement. The name was chosen after the family name of the former local landowner Nikolai Gulkewitsch. Despite railway connection but the settlement was not until the 1920s, a poor and backward village. As also several factories were built during the industrialization of the Soviet Union, Gulkewitschi was developed as a housing estate. In 1961 it received the city status.

Economy and infrastructure

Gulkewitschi is near the M29 highway and on a major southern Russian railway. Although Rajon Gulkewitschi, as well as large parts of the Krasnodar region, are dominated by agriculture, exist in the city several industries, including two reinforced concrete factories, a building material factory and food companies.
