Gumpendorfer Straße (Vienna U-Bahn)

The station Gumpendorferstraße the Vienna U -Bahn line U6 is a Grade II listed station.

Location

It is located in the 6th district of Vienna Mariahilf, on the border of the 15th district. This is due to the local history of the belt to one of the few stations in the Vienna U- Bahn network with " curved " platforms. It is named after the 1862 named Gumpendorferstraße, reminiscent of the former suburban Gumpendorf. Dominating the station on the north side of the impressive neo-gothic dome of the built 1868-1875, designed by Friedrich von Schmidt parish church of Our Lady of Victories.

The facilities extend along the Mariahilfer belt between height of the Brothers - Long Alley and the Sechshauserstraße in the 15th district. The station building is entering east as the west side by the typical green lacquered swinging doors. From the reception hall stairs lead down to the platforms. The station has lift equipment including ramps to overcome the outer step systems.

Exits lead to the outer and inner Mariahilfergürtel. There is the opportunity to take tram 6 towards Central Cemetery and 18 in the direction Schlachthausgasse or city hall (both) to transfer. Under the bridge south of the station building is the stop of bus line 57A toward Anschützgasse or Burgring. The station Gumpendorferstraße was some years as a focal point of the drug scene, but now shifted largely. In the vicinity are the home of the Aids Hilfe Wien, the Arik Brauer house and the Raimund Theater, which is proclaimed in the station announcement in the train.

History

The building was opened in 1898 as part of the belt line of the designed by Otto Wagner Stadtbahn. Since 1989, the station belongs to the network of the U6 line.

While following the acquisition of rail lines through the city of Vienna took place on the BBÖ electrification sidings were built at the track network of tram at the station Gumpendorferstraße. Use it was from the line 18G, here - coming from the Holy City - about moving to the tram network and on to the East Railway Station and drove back again. The 1938, conversion to right-hand traffic, which was not carried out from the light rail, required modifications to the tram tracks in the area Gumpendorferstraße in order to make the page change can. In the years 2006 and 2007 there was a general renovation of the building in which on Accessibility care was taken. The previously existing crossing outside the station was closed, dismantled the front of it stand.
