Gunbai

A Gumbai (Japanese军 配), short for Gumbai uchiwa (军 配 団 扇, dt "Army Aufstellungs subjects " ), is a painted wooden trays in the form of a small shield, which was used in medieval Japan to visually convey soldiers commands.
