Gunnar Helén

Nils Gunnar Helén ( born June 5, 1918 in Vingåker, Södermanland County, Sweden, † December 7, 2002 in Nacka, Stockholm ) was a Swedish politician.

Life

Helén studied post-school linguistics and was later assistant at Radiotjänst and as a reporter at the newspaper Stockholms - Tidningen and Svenska Morgonbladet active.

His political career began in 1952-1954 as chairman of the youth organization ( Liberala ungdomsförbundet ) of the Liberal People's Party. In 1953 he was first elected a deputy of the Reichstag, where he served with an interruption 1966-1970 until 1976. In 1965 he became President of the Government of Kronoberg County and held that office until 1970.

In 1969 he became the successor of Stefan Vedas as Chairman of the Liberal People's Party. In 1970 he followed this up as a leader of the liberal party in the Reichstag. In these roles, he sought the cooperation with the non-socialist parties. For the election of the Swedish Parliament in 1973, however, the party suffered a crushing defeat and lost 6.8 percent of the vote and 24 of its 58 seats so far. 1975 therefore followed by Ahlmark as party chairman, said in 1976 he also presented the group's presidency.

Helén was last 1977-1984 Government President of the Stockholm County. He was also the 1978-1984 Chairman of the Broadcasting Council ( Sveriges Radio styrelse ).
