From 1927 to 1931 he studied music at the Prussian Academy in Berlin. From 1934 to 1937 he taught at the woman high school of the Ursulines in Wroclaw Carlo joke.

Furthermore, he took lessons in composition with Max Trapp in Berlin. About Romanian friends he met Sergiu Celibidache and prepared him for the entrance examination at the Berlin Academy of Music. In 1939 he was appointed as a lecturer in music theory and composition at the Institute for Music Education at the University of Breslau. After military service and captivity (1941-1945), he fled with his wife, the singer Gerda Specht, from Silesia to Bavaria and in 1946 conductor of the Munich Bach -Verein.

From 1947 to 1959 he worked as a teacher of composition at the Northwest German Music Academy, now the University of Music Detmold. In 1959 he became professor of composition at the Royal Academy of Music in Munich and taught there until 1972.
