Günter Hirsch

Erhard Günter Hirsch ( born January 30, 1943 in Neuburg an der Donau) is a German jurist. He was 2000-2008 President of the German Federal Supreme Court. Since 2008 he holds the office of the Insurance Ombudsman.

Life

Günter Hirsch studied from 1964 to 1969 law at the Friedrich- Alexander University in Erlangen, where he remained connected after the second state examination as a research assistant until 1973. In 1973 he became a Doctor of Laws ( Dr. iur. ) Doctorate and joined the Bavarian judicial service.

According to various uses as judge and prosecutor, he moved in 1984 to the Bavarian Ministry of Justice, from 1989 with the rank of Ministerialdirigenten.

In 1992 he took up the nascent structure in the Saxon justice available and was initially to 31 December 1992 President of the District Court, from 1 January 1993 of the Higher Regional Court of Dresden. In addition, he was on 18 June 1993 to 31 March 1995 President of the Constitutional Court of Saxony.

On October 7, 1994, he was appointed Judge of the Court of Justice of the European Communities. He held at the head of the German Federal until joining this office. He was from 15 July 2000 to 31 January 2008 President of the Supreme Court.

As the union of the Presidents of the Supreme Courts of the European Union was founded in Paris on 8 March 2004, she chose Günter Hirsch to their Vice President. Since 1 April 2008, he has as successor to Professor Wolfgang Römer the Office of the Insurance Ombudsman.

Until early 2011, Hirsch was a member of the ethics committee of FIFA. In January 2011 he resigned with criticism of the controversial awarding of the FIFA World Cup 2018 ( Russia) and 2022 ( Qatar) to this function.

Hirsch is Honorary Professor at the University of Saarland.
