Günther Beck von Mannagetta und Lerchenau

Günther Beck, Knights of Mannagetta and Lerchenau ( born August 25, 1856 in Bratislava, † June 23, 1931 in Prague) was an Austrian botanist. His botanical author abbreviation is " Beck".

Life

Beck- Mannagetta, son of a prosecutor, came from an old Austrian family of civil servants. He studied at the University of Vienna and was there in 1878 to Dr. phil. doctorate.

Following a stint as a volunteer at the Botanical Hofkabinett, now the Natural History Museum, he was there from 1885 to 1899 Head of the Department of Botany. In 1894 he became a Privatdozent in 1895 and associate professor at the University of Vienna.

From 1899 to 1921 he was Professor of Systematic Botany at the German University of Prague and director of the botanical garden. From 1901 to 1907 Beck- Mannagetta was the editor of the magazine Lotus. He also worked from 1899 to 1921 as editor of the Wiener Zeitung magazine garden.

His main research areas were plant geography, flora of the Alps and the Balkans.
