Guðrið Helmsdal

Guðrið Helmsdal Nielsen, nee Poulsen ( born February 28, 1941 in Tórshavn, Faroe Islands ) is considered the first female poet in modern Faroese language.

Guðrið [ gu ː ɹɪ ] is the daughter of Annie Helmsdal and Hans Poulsen. 1953 parents moved to Denmark, where her father worked as a captain. Even as a 13 -year-old, she wrote her first poems in Faroese and Danish and had its public debut in 1958 in the journal Oyggjaskeggi, 1961, in the literary journal Vardin.

After schooling she traveled for a year England and Iceland, then to make back in Copenhagen training as a nurse and a medical assistant. They also studied Scandinavian and Faroese Philology at the University of the Faroe Islands.

1965 married Guðrið Helmsdal the Danish teacher and wood artist Ole Jakob Nielsen with whom she has two children: the writer doctor Helmsdal and Gudmund. Since 1967 the family is living in the Faroe Islands. Today she lives in the village Leynar.

In 1974 she was awarded the Literature Prize of the Faroe Islands for beautiful literature for her two volumes of poetry between 1963 and 1971. Her poems have been translated into all the Scandinavian languages ​​and English.

Was published in 2006 with Stjørnuakrar - star fields, a book of poems in German with the Faroese original text next to it. The 18 poems were selected by the author herself, and the translation was worried by the German teacher Anette Nielsen, who lives in the Faroe Islands for 20 years. Because of its bilingualism, the book is also sold in the Faroe Islands, especially Guðrið Helmsdals old Faroese editions are long out of print and previously unpublished poems appear in the band. In order to present the book in Germany Guðrið Helmsdal lectured in the Danish Embassy in Berlin and the publisher in Halle.
