It is located near the Albanian border in the large village of Plav. The town has about 1700 inhabitants.

Gusinje was 1878-1913 de facto independent since the city fathers would recognize neither the Turkish nor other then reigning powers. The city was at the time one of the most populous cities in the region and was an important trading center. After a result of the Congress of Berlin in 1878, Montenegro had raised territorial claims on Plav and Gusinje, troops occupied the League of Prizren, under the leadership of the local ruler Ali Pasha Gucia the city. In the battle of Nokšić ( Bosnian: Boj na Noksicu, Albanian Nokshiq ) in December 1879 and in January 1880 suffered the Montenegrin Army - also supported by Russian troops - two heavy defeats. The inhabitants of Gusinje were able to successfully prevent, until the collapse of the Ottoman Empire that the area was ceded to Montenegro.

Gusinje is the starting point for numerous walks in the Montenegrin Prokletija, which is protected as a national park here. The mountain range begins just south of the town.
