Gustav Ciamaga

Gustav Ciamaga ( born April 10, 1930 in London / Ontario, † June 11, 2011 in Toronto ) was a Canadian composer.

Biography

Ciamaga studied from 1951 to 1954 at the University of Western Ontario and took private composition lessons with Gordon Delamont. He continued his education until 1958 at the University of Toronto with John Weinzweig and John Beckwith continued until 1963 and studied at Brandeis University in Waltham with Arthur Berger, Harold Shapero and Irving Fine.

From 1963 he taught at the Faculty of Music at the University of Toronto. Here he headed from 1965 to the Studio for Electronic Music and in 1968 Head of the Department of Composition and Music Theory. During a sabbatical in 1970, he worked in various centers for electronic music in Europe. From 1977 to 1984 he was Dean of the Faculty of Music of the University of Toronto, where he taught until his retirement in 1994.

Ciamaga composed predominantly electro-acoustic works, including since the mid-1960s also computer-controlled music, and self-developed electronic instruments such as the Serial Sound Structure Generator. In addition, compositions for traditional instruments, including a Mass and a string quartet emerged.
