Gustav Nossal

Sir Gustav Victor Joseph Nossal (* June 4, 1931 in Bad Ischl ) is an Australian immunologist.

After the Anschluss, his family moved to Australia. Nossal studied medicine at the University of Sydney and worked with Nobel Laureate Frank Macfarlane Burnet. He was able to confirm his theory of antibody formation and was in 1965, his successor as director of the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research, a position he held until 1996. He was also Professor of Medical Biology at the University of Melbourne.

In 1996 he was a founder of the research company Four Sight.

In 1970 he was awarded the Emil von Behring Prize, in 1977, he was beaten as a Knight Bachelor knighted in 1996, he received the Robert Koch Medal and in 2000 he was Australian of the Year. Nossal is a Commander of the Order of the British Empire ( CBE) and Companion of the Order of Australia. In 1990 he received the Albert Einstein World Award of Science. He is a member of the Australian Academy of Sciences, which he was president from 1994 to 1998, and member of the Royal Society.
