Gustave Cohen

Gustave David Cohen ( born December 24, 1879 in Saint- Josse- ten-Noode, † 10 June 1958, Paris) was a French literary historian with a focus on medieval studies.

Biography

After a legal promotion Cohen moved to the study of the Romance languages ​​literature.

From 1905 to 1909 he was lecturer at headed by Karl Lamprecht Leipzig Institute for Cultural and Universal History. There he taught French theater history ( for example: " Le théâtre de français à Rostand Dumas " ) and contemporary literature, but also held practical exercises in modern French. His successor at the Institute was Gaston Monod.

1912 Cohen was awarded a professorship at the University of Amsterdam, in October 1919, he went to the University of Strasbourg. In 1925 he was appointed Maître de conférences at the Sorbonne in 1932 the title of Professor.

Cohen was Jewish but converted at the age of 64 years to Catholicism.
