The Gutach is an approximately 29 km long river in Baden-Württemberg, which runs in the center of the Black Forest.

Same name neighboring waters

Just a few kilometers southwest of the Gutach flows Wilde Gutach, even just called Gutach, by the Simonswälder valley and then at Gutach in the Elz. Another identical name Bach Gutach flows from Lake Titisee in the Wutachschlucht.

History and characteristics

The headwaters of the Gutach lies on the boundary of the municipality Schoenwald, sandwiched between those of the two source rivers Danube Brigach ( about 2.5 kilometers to the east) and Breg ( about 6.5 kilometers to the west). Do not drained like this over the Danube into the Black Sea, but over the Kinzig and the Rhine to the North Sea. The southern border of its catchment area is therefore part of the European watershed. Due to the low base level of erosion of the right near the Rhine, their valley cuts steep and deep into the plateau-like part, partly domed mountains.

From numerous spring-fed streams of Schönwalder plateau, the Gutach closed ranks to a strong stream before a total of 163 meters plunges into ten major stages in the basin of Triberg. This Triberg Waterfalls are among the ten highest in Germany. Then it flows through a narrow valley until windungsreiches Hornberg and then through a valley with breitsohligeres still steep slopes, past the place Gutach and the open-air museum Vogtsbauernhof to open a little above Hausach in the Kinzig.

Through the valley of Gutach lead the Black Forest Railway and the main road 33 Thus, the Gutach is one of the major roads of the Black Forest. The economy Gutachtal featuring numerous major wood processing plants, precision engineering small-scale industry. Here early developed even after the construction of the Black Forest Railway tourism.

The lowest part of the valley is known for its costume with eye-catching Bollenhut.
