Guttenberg is the largest city in Clayton County in the northeast of the U.S. state of Iowa on the west bank of the Mississippi River. In 2000, Guttenberg had 1887 inhabitants.

History

Originally the site was a camp of the Sauk and Fox. From French researchers, he was called from 1673 Prairie La Porte. As part of the French colony of Louisiana was the place in 1803 as part of the Louisiana Purchase to the United States, however, remained in the possession of the Indians. It was not until 1837 with the second Black Hawk Purchase sold the Indians the surrounding area. In the early days of colonization from 1845 onwards, most inhabitants immigrants from Germany. Even today, there are buildings that had been built by German engineers. The city was named after Johannes Gutenberg, the inventor of printing with movable type.
