Guy Boothby

Guy Newell Boothby ( born October 13, 1867 in Adelaide, Australia, † February 26, 1905 in Bournemouth, England) was an Australian writer.

Boothby was a son of Australian MPs Thomas Wilde Boothby. His grandfather was Benjamin Boothby, a former judge of the Supreme Court of South Australia.

His schooling experienced Boothby in Salisbury ( in Adelaide ) and later on " Christ's Hospital " in London. Already during his school days Boothby began with the first literary attempts. In 1890, a libretto " Sylvia ", which was released in December of the same year and the following year Boothby wrote the opera "The Jonquil ".

His livelihood earned Boothby as secretary of the Mayor of Adelaide. As such, he undertook along with his brother Benjamin, a study tour of Australia. The experiences of these things, he published in 1894 under the title "On the Wallaby or through the East and across Australia"; his brother returned to the illustrations.

The end of 1894 Boothby went to England and settled in Bournemouth. There he lived until his death.

Reception

With few exceptions, Boothby work (more than 50 items) forgotten today. The gothic novel " Pharos, the Egyptian" was reprinted in German translation several years ago. His Nikola series is noteworthy because the main character the Doctor Mabuse resembles its inventor Norbert Jacques was almost Boothby contemporary. In Wurdack -Verlag 2010 launched a series of new German editions of this series.

Furthermore Boothby created in 1897 the figure of the gentleman - crook Simon Carne. Famous characters like AJ Raffles and Arsène Lupin followed this criminal type.
