Guy Klucevsek

Guy Klucevsek ( born February 26, 1947 in New Kensington, Pennsylvania ) is an American accordionist and composer. The sovereign improvising, but also difficult scores playing from sheet music gave the Modern Creative Music impetus and went on to a variety of traditions from the polka, the country and Balkan music in the direction of avant-garde.

Life and work

Klucevsek, son of Slovenian immigrants learned since 1955 accordion; at the age of 14 he formed his first band. Until 1972 he studied, among other things, at the California Institute of the Arts, composition with Morton Subotnick, Gerald Shapiro and Robert Bernat. Then he acted first as a musician in theater and ballet productions before 1987 with his solo project " Scenes from a Mirage" attention to himself made ​​where the accordion indeed sounded like an organ, a synthesizer or a harmonium, but the timbre of the instrument does not were processed electronically. He then worked with John Zorn and Bill Frisell, with whom he made ​​numerous recordings. At the beginning of the 1990s, he presented two avant-garde polka albums. In 1996 he was one of the founders of the Accordion Tribe, with whom he had several times on tour. Since 1998, he belonged to the ensemble Charms of the Night Sky by Dave Douglas. His Bantam Orchestra shone from the field between modern jazz and new music. He also collaborates with Alan Bern, Laurie Anderson, Elliott Sharp, Anthony Braxton, Amy Denio, Anthony Coleman, Doug Wieselman, the Kronos Quartet and Phillip Johnston. It led to compositions by Pauline Oliveros, Alvin Lucier, Mary Ellen Childs, Fred Frith, William Duckworth, Aaron Jay Kernis, Jerome Kitzke, Stephen Montague, Somei Satoh and John Cage.

Prizes and awards
