Gymnocalycium anisitsii is a flowering plant in the genus Gymnocalycium from the cactus family ( Cactaceae ). The specific epithet honors the Hungarian pharmacist Dániel J. Anisits (1856-1911), who provided Karl Moritz Schumann with cacti.

Description

Gymnocalycium anisitsii grows individually or in groups forming with bright green, often reddish or purple tinged, spherical to shortly columnar stems and reaches diameters of up to 8 inches stature heights of up to 10 inches and more. The eight to eleven ribs are pointed tubercles. Sometimes a central spine is present, but mostly he is missing. The five to seven yellow to brown spines are slender, twisted and 1-6 inches long.

The funnel-shaped, white to pink flowers are up to 4 inches long. The red fruits are long cylindrical, up to 2.5 inches long and have a diameter of 1 centimeter.

Distribution, systematics and hazard

Gymnocalycium anisitsii is widespread in southern Brazil and in Paraguay and Bolivia.

The first description was in 1900 as Echinocactus anisitsii by Karl Moritz Schumann. Nathaniel Lord Britton and Joseph Nelson Rose set the style in 1922 in the genus Gymnocalycium. We distinguish the following sub- types:

  • Gymnocalycium anisitsii subsp. anisitsii
  • Gymnocalycium anisitsii subsp. multiproliferum ( P.J.Braun ) P.J.Braun & Esteves

Synonyms for subspecies Gymnocalycium anisitsii subsp. anisitsii include Echinocactus damsii K.Schum. (1903) and Gymnocalycium damsii ( K.Schum. ) Britton & Rose (1922 ).

In the Red List of Threatened Species IUCN, the type is known as " Least Concern ( LC) ," ie, than not led at risk.
