Gypsy (Band)

Gypsy was an American progressive rock band that had several hits in the early 1970s.

Band History

In 1964, James Johnson ( guitar), Doni Larson ( bass) and Tom Green (drums) in Minneapolis, the band The Undertones beats. With the additional member Enrico Rosenbaum (vocals, guitar), they were quite successful in the area of the Twin Cities; were among their hits Footstompin, Annie Do the Dog and Book of Love.

When Johnson took his military service in 1969, James " Owl" Walsh came (keyboards) as a replacement. After his time in the military Johnson returned to the band, which now appeared as a quintet. They went to Los Angeles, where they were the house band at the Whisky a Go Go, and called themselves "Gypsy". Their music changed towards progressive rock; frequently they were compared with the band Santana.

For Green Jay Epstein came as drummer. In 1970 they released their debut album with the hits Gypsy Gypsy Queen and Dead and Gone. Three more albums the group came onto the market until 1973, with the occupation changed several times. Then the band broke up.

1977 there was a brief reunion, who played in St. Louis at the " Super Jam 77 ". 1978 Walsh appeared with a new band, which he called " The James Walsh Gypsy Band".
