Gyula Bóbis

Gyula Bobis ( born October 7, 1909 in Kecskemét, † January 24, 1972 in Budapest) was a Hungarian wrestler. He was Olympic champion in 1948 in London.

Career

Gyula Bobis grew up in Kecskemét and began there in 1919 at the sports club Kecskeméti TE with the rings. It developed over time at an excellent light heavyweight or heavyweight, the excellently mastered both styles, Greco- Roman and freestyle. In 1934 he was Hungarian Champion in Greco -Roman style light heavyweight for the first time.

His first try at an international championship graduated Gyula at the 1936 Olympic Games in Berlin in Greco-Roman wrestling in heavyweight. He was already 27 years old and still had to pay dearly, for he lost both fights that he played and landed on the 10th Place. Also at the European Championships in Paris in 1937 in Greco -Roman style lost Gyula, this time wrestling in the heavyweight division, his two fights and came under 9 participants only on the 8th Place. At the European Championships the same year in Munich in free style he landed his first success in an international championship 3rd place and winning the bronze medal.

A bronze medal won Gyula also at the European Championships 1939 in Oslo, after the Hungarian team did not ride at the European Championships 1938 in Tallinn. In Oslo him there succeeded a points victory over the European champions from 1938 Johannes Kotkas from Estonia. But as he then was defeated from Turkey against John Nyman from Sweden and Mehmet Coban, Kotkas was still European Champion.

After this championship came in Gyula, as for all wrestlers in Europe, a break of seven years, until he could start at an international championship again. It was in 1946 at the first international championship after the Second World War in Stockholm and came back again in the light heavyweight division in free style on the 4th Place.

At the 1948 Olympic Games in London Gyula celebrated the biggest success of his career as a 39 -year-old. With four victories, he won the gold medal, defeating thereby also the Swedish favorites Bertil Antonsson.

After that, Gyula sat not to rest, but started at the World Cup 1950 in Stockholm also two years later and became Vice World Champion. In the " lion's den " he had this insert a point defeat by Bertil Antonsson.
