Gyula Farkas (linguist)

Julius Farkas, Gyula Farkas (born 27 September 1894 in Eisenstadt, Austria - Hungary, † July 12, 1958 in Göttingen ) was a Hungarian- German linguist.

Life

Gyula Farkas studied Hungarian and Romance Philology at the University of Budapest in 1919 and his doctorate. After graduation worked as a lecturer at the Hungarian Institute of the Friedrich -Wilhelms -Universität in Berlin with Ernst Lewy. From 1925 to 1928 he worked at the University of Budapest. In 1928 he was in Berlin for ao. Appointed professor and appointed in 1932 professor of Hungarian language and literature. In the era of National Socialism, he was chairman of the German - Hungarian Society and curator of the Collegium Hungaricum in Berlin. In 1939, when Germany was required of him to clean up his dual citizenship, he laid on the advice of his friend and scout out the former Hungarian Prime Minister Pál Teleki from the Hungarian citizenship. During the Second World War he was drafted into the Wehrmacht and was repeatedly used during the German occupation of Hungary in 1944 as a soldier.

After the Second World War he founded in 1947 the Finno - Ugric seminar at the University of Göttingen.
