H. D. F. Kitto

Humphrey Davy Findley Kitto ( born February 6, 1897 in Stroud, Gloucestershire, † 21 January 1982 ) was a British classical scholar.

Life

Kitto received his first professorship of Greek philology in 1920 at the University of Bristol. There he received in 1944 the professorship of Greek philology, which he held until his retirement in 1962.

In his scientific work, Kitto continued intensively with the Greek tragedians. In addition to some scientific studies, he published, among other things Translations of Sophocles drama Antigone, Electra and Oedipus Rex.

The 1951 written by him Representation The Greeks. From the reality of a historical role model provides a detailed overview of the ancient Greek culture and treated alike themes of social, military and religious history.
