Haakon VII Land is a region in northwestern Spitsbergen.

Geography

Haakon VII land is located in the northwest of the main island of Spitsbergen, north is only Albert I country. To the east lies Andrée Land, in the south James I country and Oscar II country. The western border is the line from Krossfjorden over the Lilliehöökbreen to Raudfjorden. To the west of Wood fjords cut far into the south to the land, it forms the border with the Andrée Land. The " triangle " between Haakon VII Land, Andrée Land and James I country is located on the Holtedahlfonna. Accordingly, the limit of Haakon VII country from there leads back to the west to the Kongsfjorden.

Landscape

The center of Haakon VII country is dominated by large glaciers, including the Isachsenfonna and Monacobreen. The highest point is 1449 m of Eidsvollfjellet. In the West, at Kongsfjorden, breed many birds. In the northwest, the Liefdefjorden, many polar bears live, the area belongs to Nordvest - Spitsbergen National Park.

Etymology

Haakon VII country bears his name in honor of Haakon VII (1872-1957), who was elected in 1905 to the king of Norway.
