History

Hachioji emerged in the late Heian period (12th century) around an old, no longer preserved samurai fortress, which was given the name Hachioji 1584. In the Edo period, Hachioji flourished as one of the 38 post stations on the Kōshū - Kaidō that runs from Tokyo to the Japanese Alps to the Sea of Japan.

Hachioji is with several railway lines to reach from Tokyo and Yokohama in less than an hour and has therefore become a bedroom community since 1970. The cheap land prices were also the reason for a number of universities in Tokyo, some faculties and the courses especially for the low semesters after Hachioji embarrassed.

The large number of students and the many commuters have meant that Hachioji, has with several department stores and many pubs and bars in the large pedestrian zone around the two train stations around, become one of the most vibrant suburbs of Tokyo. On the mountain of the city, the Takao, can be reached by a cable car. It provides a wide view of the Kanto plain to the skyscrapers of Tokyo on a clear day.
