Haematopinus oliveri

Haematopinus oliveri

Haematopinus oliveri (English common name: Pygmy Hog Sucking Louse ) is an ectoparasite, which has been known only from three female specimens and a nymph from the year 1977. The blood-sucking hog was detected in the fur of dwarf wild boar ( Sus salvanius ) from Darrang Assam in the northwest. The specimens had a length of 3.9 to 4.2 mm. Of the other 22 species of the genus Haematopinus it differs in the relatively short head and in the form of the sternum plate. It is unclear whether these louse has survived in the wilderness, as the dwarf wild pig ever was as nearly extinct, and can lead to the complete disappearance of the host extinction of Lauspopulation. In dwarf wild boar in captivity Haematopinus oliveri has not been established. The species is endangered in the IUCN Red List as critically ( critically endangered ) listed.
