Hagop Kazazian Pasha

Hagop Kazazian Pasha (Armenian Հագոբ Կազազյան փաշա, Turkish Agop Kazazyan; * 1833 in Istanbul, † 1891 ) was a high-ranking Ottoman official and politician of Armenian descent, who was Ottoman Minister of Finance and Treasurer under the reign of Sultan Abdulhamid II.

Biography

Life and early career

Hagop Kazazian rose up in the bureaucracy of the Ottoman state. In the early years of his career he was head of the translation department of the Ottoman Bank. After he had uncovered a misconduct in the bank, he was appointed by the Director General of the Ottoman Bank to Sultan Abdulhamid II.

The in his entire life unwed permanent Hagop Kazazian lived with his mother in the district Yeniköy of Istanbul. Since Kazazian was awarded as non- Catholics by the Pope with the Order of St. Gregory the Great, he established relations with the Armenian Catholic Church, a minority within the Armenian community, which formed an autonomous millet.

Offices

Abdulhamid II appointed Kazazian 1879 Director of the Treasury and in the following year, as the Treasury has been transformed into a ministry to ministers. Under Kazazian the Treasury was reformed in 1887, he was appointed Minister of Finance. When he had eerleben opposition to his reform plans and spending cuts, he announced his retirement. The Sultan refused the resignation and supported Kazazian in its reform efforts.

As an influential man himself Kazazian began Sarkis Balyan for, a famous architect who was exiled for alleged political activities in France. Kazazian was a member of the Armenian National Assembly, established in 1863, which regulated secular affairs of the Ottoman Armenians within the Millet system.

Kazazian Pasha the title and a number of orders of the Sultan was awarded.

Death and aftermath

Hagop Kazazian Pasha died in 1891 in a riding accident on the property of Calendar Kasrı and was given a state funeral. Kazazian was replaced as Minister of the Treasurer Office of Armenians Mikael Portukal Pasha, who served until 1897 and was in turn replaced by the Armenians Ohannes Pasha.
