Hajdú-Bihar County

Hajdú -Bihar [ hɒjdu bihɒr ː ] is a county (administrative district ) in eastern Hungary. It is bordered on the east by Romania as well as the counties of Békés, Jasz -Nagykun -Szolnok, Borsod -Abaúj -Zemplén and Szabolcs -Szatmár -Bereg. It has an area of ​​6211 km ² and (2001) 544 582 inhabitants. The county seat is Debrecen.

History and Culture

Hajdú is the traditional county of footmen, who were settled here about 1605 by Stephan Bocskai as border defense against the Ottomans. He was united under the Treaty of Trianon in 1920 with the remains of the historic county of Bihar, most of which since then has belonged to Romania, where it forms the Bihor county.
