Halepaghen Grammar School

Buxtehude

The gymnasium Halepaghen School (short HPS ) is a high school in Buxtehude in Lower Saxony.

The school was first mentioned in records in 1390 and was still a middle-class grammar school. It is named after Gerhard Halepaghe (* 1430 in Buxtehude, † April 1484 in Buxtehude ), a major Buxtehude Magister, named.

General

Before the high schools of the Federal Republic of Germany from its upper level class system ( Upper Second, Lower Sixth, Oberprima ) on target systems ( as in 2006 ) surrounded the Halepaghen School was the first to give it practically tested. The developed system thereby the greatest possible freedom of choice for high school students was known nationwide as the " Buxtehude " model. In addition to these reforms was developed at the HPS a committee, called the Joint Committee (in short " GA "), which was developed under the headmaster Uffrecht of an informal round of talks on a binding body ( recognition as a school experiment in 1976 ), which has since been as exemplary of the ideal of a democratic school can be viewed. The GA is made up equally of elected representatives of the student body, parents and the teaching staff, chaired by the Headmaster together, but instead of voting only has veto power, if decisions of the GA have legal reasons not stand. The General Conference has all the competences delegated to the GA, which may be vested in a Committee on the basis of the Lower Saxony law school. The GA is responsible for important decisions that affect the school day, problems discussed and worked out ideally solutions, which can be agreed by all three parties. For parents and students, this is an extraordinary and unusually high decision-making power, which is largely unknown in normal schools of general education in Germany. After the Lower Saxony state parliament had passed a law to " self- responsible school," the future of GA seemed questioned. Since the overall conference was forced to cede many powers to the school management or the country's newly established " school board " and could not delegate to the GA of this, the GA had to be reorganized. Currently (GA and school board ) is working on the Halepaghen - school with two bodies that cooperate as closely as possible and be occupied in the ideal case with the same representatives. In the school board sent the eight teachers, students and parents each have four representatives. These elected officials have simultaneously a mandate for the GA, where join the Centre for the parents and student groups each have 4 more members with simple GA mandates. The equal representation of GA, which was endowed by the General Conference with responsibilities, so had to under the Act to " self- responsible school " can not be canceled. At the HPS teach about 120 teachers (as of January 2008).

With the beginning of the eighties, therefore, especially the younger teachers Halepaghen school tried again to contact with schools in France, the USA and England. The most important is probably the exchange with the Collège Henri Guillaumet in the south of France, Blagnac ( near Toulouse ) call, with the first concrete agreements were concluded in 1984. The French exchange student usually have German as their first foreign language and learn it for about three years, when it comes to sharing. Normally, the French come at Easter time by Buxtehude, the return visit of the Germans followed in the fall.
