Halil Åžerif Pasha

Halil Serif Pasha, also known as Khalil Bey or Bey Halil (* 1831 in Egypt; † January 12, 1879 ) was a Turkish diplomat and art collector. Théophile Gautier described him as the first Muslim with an art collection in the Western sense.

Biography

Born in Egypt, he was the Ottoman ambassador in Saint Petersburg. He subsequently moved to Paris as a private and was presented by Charles -Augustin Sainte -Beuve in Gustave Courbet. After he sold his collection in 1868, was Halil Serif Pasha between August 1870 and September 1872 Ambassador to the Ottoman Embassy in Vienna, and later for a short time in Paris.

Collection

  • The origin of the world of Courbet, the image that is considered the epitome of the art scandal, was commissioned by Khalil -Bey commissioned and is now in the Musée d' Orsay.
  • The sleep of Courbet, also appointed by Khalil -Bey, is now in the Petit Palais Museum in Paris.
