Halinard

Halinard of Saint- Benign (also Halinard of Lyon) (c. 990; † June 27, 1052 in Rome) was from 1046 to 1052 Archbishop of Lyon. He was a staunch supporter of church reform. After his bishop survey he has denied the oath of allegiance to the king. He later rejected the papacy and was during the pontificate of Leo IX. to his closest advisers.

Life

He came from the Burgundian noble family of noblemen from Sombernon. Halinard was educated at the Bishop of Autun and Langres seats. He entered the Benedictine Order one, was a pupil of William of Dijon and was in 1031 Abbot of St- Bénigne (now Dijon Cathedral ).

After his elevation to Archbishop of Lyon in 1046 he refused the customary oath of allegiance to Henry III. to afford. He justified this by saying that the Bible and the Rule of St. Benedict, the strips would prohibit an oath. " Would I hintan provide the commandments of the eternal King and the monastic rule, I implored, what confidence would remain me that I have to consider the oath to the Emperor? (...) The Lord says in the Gospel: ' Ye shall not wören; ' the Rule of St.. Benedict ' not to swear ' (...) It would be better for me never to receive the episcopate, to transgress the command of God. (...) Then the bishop of Speyer Sigebaud: Who is this man who dares in the palace of the emperor to refuse obedience, which none of us ever dared. He is the king swear or be thrown out. " It is unclear whether Pope Gregory VI. Halinard had to force the acceptance of the election.

The king himself has waived after some time out to ask for a formal oath and has the investiture made. The action was quite controversial within the clergy. Some bishops as that of Speyer Heinrich advised not to accept the refusal, while the bishops presented from Upper Lorraine on the side of Halinards. Whether the action at Hailnard itself was so apolitical, as he himself claims, is unclear. The matter has in any case to go to crises within the imperial church system by the internal church reforms.

He was succeeded by the Romans, the papacy is wearing, but he refused. He belonged to the closest surrounding Leo IX. next to the subdeacon Hildebrand ( later Gregory VII ), Udo of Toul and Peter Damian. Leo IX has brought him already at the beginning of his pontificate in its proximity. He took in 1049 at a synod in Rome, and a part in Reims. Even with the Easter synod in Rome in 1050 he was present. In the same year he accompanied the Pope on his trip to France. The Pope puts him as a negotiator with the Normans. He represented the Pope in Rome in 1052, when he traveled to Hungary. Of considerable importance, he was responsible for the formulation of papal policy in France.
