History

First trains of the Berlin U -Bahn drove here from 18 February 1902 that he was one of the first subway stations in Berlin. Back then drove the yellow car to the east to Warschauer Brücke, in the west it went to Zoologischer Garten. The train station itself, situated on the bank of the Landwehr canal at the Belle- Alliance Bridge, designed the architect Hermann Solf and Franz Wichards in a mixture of styles from Neo-Renaissance and Neo-Baroque. Striking here was the use of a very bright stone, the entrance portal of the high station crowned two turrets, each with an impeller, the characteristics of the elevated railway company.

On January 30 In 1923, the existing station on the East- West line yet for the new line to C, but in contrast to the U -Bahn line from 1902 it belonged to the city of Berlin. In order to allow the transit traffic between the two competing routes, were allowed to build a long connecting tunnel, as the city of Berlin refused, the Belle- Alliance Bridge re-build what would have been necessary for a umsteigefreundlicheren Station on Line C. By 1924, there ended the trains from the Weddinger lake road, from then it went even further south to Tempelhof or Neukölln.

The passenger numbers rose steadily, so that the hall of the high station and its platform in 1927 and 1935 on 6 - had to be extended or 8- car trains. Plans for a new building of the station came on at this time, the side platforms should disappear. The intentions were not pursued by the city of Berlin for the parlous economic situation.

The Second World War had serious consequences for the station: Both parts of the station had to be shut down due to numerous bomb hits and power shortage in April 1945. The first trains were run from the underground part of the station already on 4 July 1945, then a shuttle to the adjacent station Belle- Alliance -Straße. The elevated station, however, had suffered very serious damage, in October 1945 left the BVG east of the previous stops a wood platform for each direction of tension build. This provisional lasted four years, until October 2, 1949, a controlled traction in the old station building was possible again, which had been built in a much simplified form.

In the following years, neither Berlin blockade nor the division of Berlin directly Hallesches Tor station when the line management of individual lines changed concerned.

In the years 1975/1976 to a fundamental transformation of the U6 station. In order to use longer trains, let the BVG the platform from 80 to 110 meters longer. The once white walls now blue -clad metal plates with red station signs. In contrast, the supervisory cottage received a coat of paint in orange, which is a strong complementary contrast emerged. The other held in blue station design has been preserved in its color. Behind the station the tracks were redesigned so that an additional, single-track and sufficient only for a train reversing facility took place here. To date, nothing much has changed since then on today's lines U1 and U6 station.

The installation of elevators for accessibility should be initially completed by 2010. Currently, the SNB expects a completion by 2015, 7.3 million euros have been earmarked for this purpose. To meet all passenger needs, three elevators have to be built (platform U1 direction Uhland Street, platform U1 Warschauer Straße, platform U6). In the medium term, it is also planned to equip the high platform with a further access, so that shorten distances to the subway station from the fields of Willy Brandt House, William Street and Mehring Damm.
