Halsey Stevens

Halsey Stevens ( born December 3, 1908 in Scott, Cortland County, New York, † January 20, 1989 in Inglewood, California ) was an American composer, music pedagogue and musicologist.

Life

Stevens studied until 1937 at Syracuse University, among others, William Berwald, also in 1944 at the University of California at Berkeley with Ernest Bloch. As a teacher, he worked at Syracuse University ( 1935-1937 ), the Dakota Wesleyan University ( 1937-1941 ), the College of Music of the Bradley Polytechnic Institute (1941 to 1946 interrupted partly by military service ), the University of Redlands (1946 ) and from 1946 at the University of Southern California until his retirement in 1976. Added to this were a visiting professor at Yale University and Others (1960 /61).

In addition to various composition awards include two Guggenheim Fellowships (1964 and 1971 ) to Stevens ' Awards.

Work

Stevens ' compositions remained committed to the tonality and include orchestral works ( including three symphonies and concertos ), numerous chamber works and vocal compositions. As a writer, he wrote, among other things, a biography of Béla Bartók (The Life and Music of Béla Bartók, first edition 1953), which is still one of the English standard works on these composers.
