Halszka Osmólska

Halszka Osmólska ( born September 15, 1930 in Poznan, † 31 March 2008) was a Polish paleontologist.

Life

Born in 1930 in Poznan, Poland, she graduated in 1952 in the Departments of Biology and Earth Sciences at the Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznan graduate. She pulled in the same year to Warsaw, where they at the University of Warsaw in 1955 received the title of "Master of Biological Sciences ". Seven years later, she received her doctoral degree in ibid biology and earth sciences. Since 1955 she was a member of the Institute of Paleontology and later received the title of professor. She worked more than 50 years for the Institute and held from 1984 to 1989 the position of Director held. From 1975 to 1992 she was part of the editorial board of the scientific journal "Acta Palaeontologica Polonica ".

While she busied herself at the beginning of their scientific work with the trilobites from the Devonian and Carboniferous of Poland and Eurasia, they started in 1963 with their work on dinosaurs from the sedimentary rocks of the Gobi desert, especially theropods. Great visibility they reached through their co-authorship of the book "The Dinosauria " with David Weishampel and others, which was launched in 1990 and 2004 and is considered a standard work of paleontology. She was Erstbeschreiberin a number of new genera of dinosaurs, and their several genera and species were named in honor of, among other things osmolskae Velociraptor and Osmolskina. She worked a lot together with her colleague Teresa Maryańska.

She died in early 2008 of an illness, leaving behind her husband Tadeusz Osmólska, her son and his wife and three grandchildren.

In 2003 she was made an honorary member of the Society of Vertebrate Paleontology.
