Hamburg Airport S-Bahn line

The airport S- Bahn Hamburg is a nearly three -kilometer stretch of the Hamburg S - Bahn network. It was opened on 11 December 2008.

Traffic

The airport S- Bahn trains connect the Hamburg Airport via the railway station Ohlsdorf with the Hamburg city center. The route is traced out by going underground with the exception of a short section north of Ohlsdorf. The tunnel ramp is directly in front of the station Klein Borstel the subway line U1. The tunnel is due to geological conditions at a depth of up to 30 meters below the surface. He will cross through the Alster Lake and a larger residential area in Fühlsbuttel.

For public transport in the tunnel station only exist the platform tracks 3 and 4

Operation

The route is served by the S1. The coming from the direction of downtown trains are winged this in Ohlsdorf station. The front pulling part runs on the airport, the rear part of the train on the existing range of S1 to Poppenbüttel. Into town, the trains are coupled together accordingly. The journey time from central station to the airport is 24 minutes in the opposite direction 25 minutes. The airport is connected in a 10 -minute intervals to the city center, in the peak hours in the early morning and late evening a thinned 20 -minute intervals is offered.

The route will be operated and monitored by an electronic signal box in Ohlsdorf from. The signal box ( name: Ofs ) was taken in September 2008, just months before the opening of the airport route in operation. Furthermore, the line was equipped with new Ks- signals and systems for digital railway.

History

The connection between the airport and a rapid transit has been discussed since the 1960s. Until the end of May 1974, the airport was linked by the line 9 of Hamburg tram to the city center. The plans already considered for the originally planned subway line U4 the possibility of an extension to the airport, which have been available to the late 1970s can be. However, after suspension of the construction of the U4 airport remained without express train connection. Therefore, the further planning progress was slow, because until the 1980s, the construction of a new major airport in cold churches was planned, which could replace the existing Hamburg Airport. With the prospect of speedy task Fuhlsbüttels was no pressing need for connection.

Only after the plans for the new airport were not pursued in the late 1980s, a high-speed railway connection was re-examined, but due to funding problems, the concepts got does not go beyond project studies. However, part of the station at the airport was built in the shell in 1991. The decisive impulse for connection went from the decision of the Senate to the expansion of the airport in 1998 from.

Due to residents complaints against the project, construction work could be started only after a roughly two -year delay on 11 April 2001. The completion was provided according to optimistic estimates, taking into account the plaintiff induced delays already for 2005, after water ingress during construction in 2004 for 2007 and was actually on 12 December 2008. Already the day before the commencement of regular operation, however, were free introductory rides to the station offered.

Extensions

According to the concept " Aircraft " should the S- Bahn line AKN or the Alster north runway will be extended to the airport in a northerly direction to the route. Connected to an expansion of AKN - trunk route between Henstedt -Ulzburg and cold churches should order a railway line Kiel - Hamburg Airport - Hamburg Hauptbahnhof be set up to provide, among others, many parts of Schleswig -Holstein better public transport connections to the Hamburg airport.

The idea of extending the route to the airport AKN stem line was picked up by the AKN 2007 and examined in a feasibility study .. Also it is part of the so-called three -axis concept, which introduced the Schleswig-Holstein Ministry of Economic Affairs in February 2008.

Route data

The track is designed for a maximum speed of 80 km / h and electrified with a power rail for use with the DC -S -Bahn trains. The tunnel ramp has a slope of 40 ‰. The station Hamburg Airport (Flughafen ) received a 140 -meter-long middle platform, making it suitable for trains in execution length. The total cost of the project (as of 2008) about 280 million euros, which have taken over 60 % and the City of Hamburg with 40 % of the federal government. The Hanseatic City of Hamburg has its share, however, still not fully paid for, so far lacks a final statement of Deutsche Bahn. In the early days was expected to handle about 13,500 passengers per day.

Discussion on the station name

Until September 2008, it was envisaged that the new station only Hamburg Airport should be called. With the short-term supplement to the German name, the Senate responded to a joint request by members of the CDU and the GAL, who asked for a name change to (Hamburg Airport ) airport. The proposal was directed against perceived by applicants as a negative use of anglicisms. However, a few days after submitting the application, the lead deputies distanced from the proposal, as in the complete change in high additional costs would be expected that would arise for example when reprinting of roadmaps, course books and travel plans that were already in the mood for the time of application. Critics of the proposal objected also that an internationally oriented place like the airport should take an English name. Nevertheless, the German -language name is used on the S -Bahn stations of the largest German airports Frankfurt and Munich, as well as on all other German airport train stations.
