Hamden is a town in New Haven County in the U.S. state of Connecticut, United States, with 59,200 inhabitants ( 2004). The metropolitan area has a size of 86.3 km ². Near the town there is a special hill formation with the name " Sleeping Giant " what the area has led to the nickname "The Land of the Sleeping Giant " (Land of the Sleeping Giant ).

History

Hamden was originally settled by Puritans as part of the City of New Haven. The land was purchased by Theophilus Eaton and Reverend John Davenport in 1638 from the living there Quinnipiack - Indian tribe. In 1786, from a separate city, which was named after John Hampden by merging several villages. In the 19th and early 20th century was a lively influx of immigrants, mainly from Ireland and Italy. In the period after the Second World War, the southern part of the city changed to the industrial center, while the northern part retained its rural character.
