Brown Band Hamlet perch ( Hypoplectrus puella )

The Hamlet perch ( Hypoplectrus ) are a genus of Sägebarschen ( Serranidae ). The 14 inches long expectant fish live hidden in coral reefs in the Caribbean, on the south coast of Florida and in the Bahamas. They feed on small fish and invertebrates.

Speciation

In the Hamlet of bass speciation process is still in full swing. The different species were seen for a long time as different color variations of a type that are just about to evolve into separate species. The distribution areas of different types overlap, but some are missing in a part of the habitat. The Golden and the Indigo Hamlet perch live at depths of 10 to 40 meters, while the other variants prefer shallower water to 15 meters. In reproduction of the same color are preferably partner. 5 % of the fish spawn but with different colored animals down, a sign that the speciation is not yet complete. Some color variations imitate aggressive damselfish after ( mimicry ).

Reproduction

Hamlet Groupers are hermaphrodites. A self-fertilization does not take place, because only eggs or sperm are released during a spawning. Mating takes place about one meter above the ground, with the male partner acquiring fish to the " female " curves when sperm and eggs are ejected.
