Han Yong-un

Han Yong -un also known by his Buddhist name Manhae ( Kor. 만해 Hanja万 海or卍 海) ( born August 29, 1879 in Hongseong, Chungcheonnam, † June 29, 1944 in Seoul) was a Korean poet, political activist and reformist of modern Buddhism.

Life

Han Yong -un (Han Yu- cheon born Kor. 한유 천 ), studied in childhood the Chinese classics in a Seodang and returned to at a young age to the spiritual life. At the age of 26, he entered the Buddhist monastic order of Baekdamsa temple, where he studied both Buddhist texts and modern philosophy and an ascetic existence led.

Han, who witnessed how Korea was under Japanese rule, the time of his life actively promoted the independence of Korea. From 1918 Han published the magazine Yusim whose contents conveyed the idea of nonviolent resistance and the people should inspire respect the independence.

Han is one of the representatives of the Declaration of Independence, which was proclaimed in moving the first of March 1919. After the protests against the Japanese colonial government, he was arrested and received a sentence of seven years. After three years, he was released into the wild. Despite repression by the colonial government, he continued to play an important role in various civil movements, Buddhist movements or alliances. Throughout his life Han Yong -un also strove for reform in Korean Buddhism. His works Joseon bulgyo yusillon ( 조선 불교 유신론 ) (1913) and Hanguk bulgyo gaehyeo gan (1930 ) deal with concrete proposals such as a central organization of Buddhism and emphasize the need for a popular Buddhism for the Korean spirit.

Han wrote numerous poems in Chinese and Korean. Among his most famous poems is one of The Silence of the Beloved ( 님 의 침묵 ). Most the poem has been interpreted that it is the beloved is not a concrete person, but to his country. The remaining 10 years of life spent Han Young -un in Seoul, where he died in 1944.

Since 1974, named after him Manhae Literature Prize is awarded.
