Hanayo

Hanayo Nakajima (Japanese中 岛 花 代, Nakajima Hanayo; * 1970 in the prefecture of Tokyo ) is a Japanese artist, photographer and musician.

Life

Hanayo grew up in a Western-oriented family. End of the 1980s she broke off her studies to be trained geisha, whose traditional art fascinated. In addition to her training, she founded together with the Japanoise musicians Masami Akita ( Merzbow ) and Masaya Nakahara (Violent Onsen Geisha ), the band Muscats.

In December 1992 Hanayo was pictured on the cover of the travel magazine Merian as " demure " Geisha. This was followed by a cover story after the bubble / Japan in the British fashion magazine The Face, which made ​​her suddenly known to a wider audience. Subsequently, she worked as a model for photo shoots and fashion shows, including for Jean Paul Gaultier.

In solo shows, she presented her photographs as well as various video and installation art objects. Hanayos photographs have appeared in several volumes. Hanayo lives with her daughter alternately in Tokyo, London and Berlin.
