Hancock Lee Jackson

Hancock Lee Jackson ( * May 12, 1796 in Madison County, Kentucky, † March 19, 1876 in Salem, Oregon ) was an American politician (Democratic Party), and in 1857 the 13th Governor of Missouri.

Early years and career

Hancock Jackson attended the local schools of his home in Kentucky. In 1821 he moved to Missouri, where he was politically active in 1829. In that year he was elected sheriff in Randolph County. In 1845 he was a delegate to a conference to revise the state constitution of Missouri. Between 1851 and 1855 he was a member of the State Senate.

Political career

In 1856 he was elected as a Democratic candidate for lieutenant governor of his state. As the elected governor trusts him with Polk on February 27, 1857 resigned from his post in order to enter the U.S. Senate, Jackson had to exercise the governorship until a new election. He was between February 27 and October 22, 1857 Governor of Missouri. Then he was back to 1861 Vice- Governor. An attempt to become self- elected governor, failed in 1860.

After that, he was U.S. Marshal for the Western Missouri. Following the election of Abraham Lincoln, he resigned from this post. In 1865, he moved to Oregon, where he died in 1876. Hancock Jackson was married to Ursley Oldham, with whom he had eleven children.
