The Hangzhou Wan Daqiao (Chinese杭州 湾 大桥/杭州 湾 大桥, Hangzhou Pinyin Wān Daqiao, english Hangzhou Bay Bridge ) is a bridge section which spans the Hangzhou Bay on the east coast of China. The bridge connects Cixi, located 25 km north- west of Ningbo, with Jiaxing, thus shortening the distance between Shanghai and Ningbo by 120 km. With a length of 36 km, it was the longest sea bridge in the world when it opened in 2008. In 2011 she lost this status to the Jiaozhou Bay Bridge. The building consists among other things of two cable-stayed bridges with 448 m and 318 m span. Cross the bridge and the Ring Road Hangzhou Bay leads ( G92).

Architectural History

The construction of the bridge started on June 8, 2003. Both bridge parts were connected on 26 June 2007 and on 1 May 2008, earlier than planned, was released in the bridge opened to traffic .. There were 11.8 billion yuan (equivalent to approximately 1.4 billion euros ) to invest in the construction, of which about half comes from private companies in Ningbo. Ten years passed for planning and construction period. Chief architect was Lin Guoxiang. More than 600 experts from different disciplines were involved in the preparation of the project. Particularly problematic was the foundation of the pillars, because the tidal range of over nine meters in the shallow bay and the porous seabed posed a major challenge.

Structure

The Hangzhou Bay Bridge consists of nine sections. The two cable-stayed bridges are particularly demanding constructed. Pylons of almost 100 meters height keep the tension cables. 660 arches and 7,000 pillars, which are about 70 meters high, carrying the building. The larger of the two passages has a pylon span of 448 m, the passage width is 408 m. The bridge is designed to withstand wind speeds of up to 230 km / hr. The steel companies involved gave a guarantee for the next 100 years for the carrier parts. A total of 800,000 tons of steel and 2.5 million tons of concrete were used. About halfway, right above the sea, now a service island was built, which includes a service station, restaurants, a hotel, a conference center and a viewing platform.
