Hans Hansen (painter)

Hans Hansen ( born November 14, 1920 in Mikladalur, Faroe Islands, † March 8, 1970 in Copenhagen, buried in Mikladalur ), also known as Hans í Mikladali was a Faroese painter.

Life and work

Hans was born in the remote village Mikladalur on Kalsoy. Like other young men of his generation, he went at the age of 15 years as a deep-sea fishermen to the sea. Later he made a painting apprenticeship and in 1942 was a journeyman painter. During the war he lived in Iceland, where the encounter with the art of John Kjarvals animated his interest in painting. 1949 Hans Hansen moved to Copenhagen to study first at Bizzie Høyers Drawing School ( 1949-1953 ) and later at the School of Fine Arts at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts ( 1953-1957 ). At the Academy of Art, he studied the technique of fresco painting. In 1958 he went with his countryman and fellow artists Ingálvur av Reyni to a study trip to Paris.

After finishing his education he settled in Tórshavn, where he worked as a painter. Hans Hansen is one of the around 1920 born, pioneering generation Faroese painters who have been inspired in their youth by the artist Sámal Joensen - Mikines. Thematically, he was strongly linked with the landscapes, buildings and people of his native village.

During a stay in Ravenna in 1962, he studied more carefully the technique of fresco painting and mosaic art. He certainly had the intention to perform monumental decorations, but because of illness, and because of his early death, he was able to complete only two more plants in these techniques. There are, however, some minor works before in fresco and mosaic. The fresco painting had a special meaning for Hans Hansen. So he tried even with his oil paintings, the special surface effect, to obtain the clear tone of color and the characteristic pastoral tone that are characteristic of fresco colors. Characteristic for his landscapes and portraits are the clear shape, purity and brightness of the colors and a personal lyrical tone. In recent months, signs of his work at the University of Regensburg were discovered.
