Hans-Heinrich Voigt

Hans -Heinrich Voigt ( born April 18, 1921 in Eitzendorf ( Hilgermissen ) Hoya ) is a German astronomer and former director of the University Observatory Göttingen.

Voigt was the son of a minister and the family moved about Bethel to Celle, where Voigt 1939, the High School made ​​and then in Göttingen studied astronomy, interrupted by military duty 1941 to 1945. Voigt received his doctorate in 1949 in astronomy in Göttingen with a dissertation on magnesium lines in the solar spectrum attenuation and center- to-limb variation of the wings of the Mg series 31P N1d on the sun ( supervisor: Paul ten Bruggencate ) and was then a research assistant in Kiel ( Albrecht Unsöld ), at the Lick Observatory in California (1951 /52) and assistant in Göttingen. In 1956 he completed his habilitation. In 1958, he was initially Observer and scientific advice to the observatory in Hamburg -Bergedorf ( at Otto Heckmann ) and from 1963 head of the University of Göttingen observatory and professor in Göttingen. In 1986 he became Professor Emeritus.

1968 to 1971 he was Pro- Rector, Rector and Kon - Rector of the University of Göttingen. 1973 to 1976 he was president of the Astronomical Society, then a board member. 1964 to 1977 he was president of the Gauss -Gesellschaft ( which had been founded shortly before) and 1987 to 2001 its managing director ( Gauss was also director of the University Observatory in Göttingen and Voigt its seventh successor ). Starting from 1953 to 1968, he wrote numerous reports for the astronomical annual report. He was co-editor of the fishing lexicon astronomy and is the author of the famous textbook outline of astronomy.

He is a member of the Göttingen Academy of Sciences and was its president from 1978 to 1979. He is a member of the Leopoldina and the Brunswick Scientific Society. In 1993 he received the Carl -Friedrich- Gauss Medal.

Between 1965 and 1991 he was the (seven) Astronomy volumes of the Landolt- Bornstein out (J. Springer -Verlag). He was also in 1991 and 1992 in three volumes, the "Collected Works " by Karl Schwarzschild out.

The 1988 discovered asteroid ( 4378 ) Voigt is named after him.
