Hans Julius Wolff

Hans Julius Wolff ( born October 3, 1898 in Elberfeld, † November 5, 1976 in Münster ) was a German legal scholar.

Life

Wolff studied in Göttingen, Bonn, Munich and Halle. In 1925 he received his doctorate in Göttingen at Julius Hatchek about the basics of the organization of the metropolis. In 1929 he habilitated in Frankfurt Friedrich Giese ( thesis: affiliation and legal person ). In 1933 he was appointed to Frankfurt as professor of public law, but he could not act in the office for political reasons. From 1935 to 1939 he was a professor in Riga, in 1941 in Prague. During the period of National Socialism Wolff published little. About his conduct during the Third Reich later he said: "I was not a hero, but I have not compromised myself at least. "

After the war he fled to Upper Bavaria. Fleeing his wife Lieselotte died giving birth to her fourth child.

From 1946 he taught at the Westfälische Wilhelms-Universität in Münster, where he settled with his second wife Marta. As he was politically unencumbered, Wolff was appointed in 1947 to the Consultative Committee on Administrative and Public Law at the British zone of occupation. In this role he was involved in the drafting of the Military Government Ordinance No. 165.

Besides Officially Wolff had worked as a judge at the Supreme Administrative Court and the first President of the Association of the German constitutional lawyer (1952-1954) worked. In 1957 he became the Westphalian section of the International Association of Legal and Social Philosophy.

From 1956 to 1966 was published by CH Beck, the first edition of his three-volume textbook on administrative law. It is still considered the standard work on the German administrative law. After the death Wolff in 1976, the work of Otto Bachof and Rolf Stober was continued (ISBN 3406466036 ).

The students include Christian Wolff -Friedrich Menger, also formerly a professor at the Westfälische Wilhelms- University, where Wolff's successor at the Institute of Local Government Studies, and Martin Kriele.
