Hans Reichel

Hans Reichel ( born May 10, 1949 in Hagen, † November 22, 2011 in Wuppertal ) was a German guitarist, violinist (in the free jazz / improvised music ), instrument maker and typographer from Wuppertal.

Music

After the self-study violin Reichel played from the age of 15, first in rock bands beat music, blues rock and compositions of Frank Zappa, before he completed a design study. The early seventies, published his first solo recordings for guitar. He dealt not only with unconventional, yet were playing techniques, but developed and built third bridge guitars from the beginning. Pickups he brought to places where they do not actually belong; instead of a lot of guitars also had two necks. Through the mutual effect of sound research and musical execution Reichel had an enormous potential of their own sound possibilities. "He has not only enriched by new designs and performance techniques, but also new sound dimensions of the existing guitar performance", judged Bert Noglik.

In his sound experiments, he also invented an entirely new string instrument, the Daxophon, he also regularly played and for which he also " operettas " composed. Although Reichel worked mostly solo, but already in the seventies with Rüdiger Carl together (later also in Bergisch -Brandenburg Quartet with Ernst- Ludwig Petrovsky and Sven -Åke Johansson, as well as in the September band there with Shelley Hirsch and Paul Lovens ). With cellist Tom Cora, with Michel Waisvisz, with Achim Knispel, with Stephan Wittwer, with Keith Tippett, with Fred Frith and with the Japanese guitarist Kazuhisa Uchihashi he formed the duo. Together with percussionist Eroc (of the band Rough cut ) created in 1986 the album " Cinema " ( re-released as "The Return of Uncle Boskopp "). Mostly he performed in larger groups, such as to Johansson to Butch Morris and around the saxophonist Thomas Borgmann. With Jan Kazda, Harald Heller and Ingo Specht he played (even at international festivals, for example in Bologna ) in an "All Dax ( ophone ) Band ". For the Kronos Quartet he wrote the composition " Namakemono " which he published in 1997 aufführte (along with this ). Concert tours have taken Reichel in over 40 countries in North America, Europe and Southeast Asia; for a long time he lived in Japan. The construction and operation of its instruments were presented in detail in American, Japanese and European scientific journals, and his music is be heard on numerous solo LPs and CDs.

Layout

As a type designer Reichel developed several families ( Barmeno, FF Dax, FF Daxline, FF Sari, FF Schmalhans, FF Routes ) that experienced a wide distribution in graphic design and desktop publishing in part. So its FF Dax example of UPS, the Noris Bank, the New Democratic Party of Canada and the Total Music Meeting will be used. It is one of the most successful titles of the FontFont library of FSI FontShop International. The FF Sari is for example the typeface from the wholesale company Lekkerland and the logo font of BEFG. Reichel, the student Günter Gerhard Long Berthold was described himself in an interview of the mirror as a " magazine makers ".

Awards

Reichel received the 1998 Prize of the City Savings Bank Wuppertal. "As an improviser and composer as soloist and in ensemble playing itself Reichel moves in the border areas between conventional musical genres and contemporary music, in which he previously unimaginable and unknown dimensions of sound opens up " ( Jazz Live).
