Hans Wilhelm Schüßler

Hans Wilhelm Schuessler ( born February 28, 1928 in Dortmund, † 9 December 2007) was a German communications engineer.

Life

Hans Wilhelm Schuessler studied at the school of engineering at the RWTH Aachen and Dortmund. In 1958 he received his doctorate in Aachen with the work over the sampling theorem and its application to the calculation of spectral functions of time functions and vice versa; In 1961 he habilitated with the writing On the representation of transfer functions and networks on the analog computer. He was then a postdoctoral fellow at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York.

In 1963 he was appointed associate professor at the University of Karlsruhe; In 1966 he received an appointment at the Institute for Communications Engineering at the newly established Faculty of Engineering, Friedrich -Alexander -University Erlangen -Nuremberg. He retired in 1993. He taught as a professor emeritus until 1998.

Work

Research focuses Schuessler were the digital signal processing and its application in telecommunication. For his work he has received numerous awards; 2002 Jack S. Kilby Signal Processing Medal in recognition of his leading role in the development of digital signal processing, in particular for his contributions to the theory, design and implementation of analog and digital filters.

In 1990 he was admitted as a full member of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences.

In 1996 he founded with his wife Helga and Hans Wilhelm Schuessler Foundation for the promotion of scientific exchange at the University of Erlangen- Nuremberg. For the renovation of the former entrance building of the barracks of the Bavarian Army in Erlangen, today's University Guest House, Helga and Hans Wilhelm Schuessler were honored in 2001 with the Bavarian Monument Protection medal.
