Career

Athlete

Hansi Hinterseer came very early to skiing, also because he often had to face down on skis in the winter and from school by the Seidlalm where he grew up to Kitzbühel. His father, Ernst, slalom Olympic champion in 1960, promoted to the athletic career of his son from the start and looked after him in the Kitzbühel Ski Club. Hansi's younger brothers Ernst jun. and Guido were also skier.

Hinterseer 1968 Austrian student champion in slalom, giant slalom and combined. A year later, he was inducted into the national team of the Austrian Ski Federation. In the 1971/72 season the specialist in the technical disciplines took part in the first World Cup races and took in the slalom in Berchtesgaden on January 9, 1972 with his first points in ninth.

As early as next winter, the 1972/73 season, he achieved a breakthrough with the world leaders. On March 8, 1973, the 19 -year-old celebrated in the giant slalom in Anchorage his first victory, securing superior to other four second places, winning the giant slalom standings. In the World Cup he came equal points with the German Christian Neureuther fourth. In this year he also became Austrian champion in giant slalom.

At the beginning of the 1973/74 season won Hinterseer on 8 December in Val d'Isere his second Giant Slalom, on January 27, he was in his hometown for the first time in Kitzbühel slalom at the top of the podium. In the season 1977/78 his results broke completely. Hinterseer then finished with only 24 years of his World Cup career and launched henceforth among professional skiers in the U.S. Pro ​​Ski Tour. There he had from the beginning, remarkably, also in the downhill big success. He finished in 1980 and 1981 behind his compatriot Andre Arnold finished second overall and was in the years 1982 and 1983 professional world champion in downhill.
