Harcourt J. Pratt

Harcourt Joseph Pratt ( born October 23, 1866 in Highland, New York, † May 21 1934 in Highland, New York ) was an American politician. Between 1925 and 1933 he represented the State of New York in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

Harcourt Joseph Pratt was born one year after the end of the civil war in Ulster County. He attended public schools and Claverack Academy in Claverack. After that he worked in the lumber and coal business. He also went to banking transactions. Between 1895 and 1897 he sat in the District Council of Ulster County and in 1897 in the New York State Assembly. He was since 1900 director of the First National Bank of Highland and since 1921 the Kingston Trust Company. Between 1908 and 1926 he sat in the Education Committee of Highland. Politically, he was a member of the Republican Party.

In the congressional elections of 1924 for the 69th Congress Pratt was in the 27th electoral district of New York in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington DC chosen, where he became the successor of Charles B. Ward on March 4, 1925. He was re-elected three times in a row. Since he gave up one run again in 1932, he retired after March 3, 1933 from the Congress.

After his time Congress he resumed his former business activities. He died on May 21, 1934 following a car accident in Highland. His body was then buried in the Highland Cemetery.
