Hardanger Line

The railway Voss Granvin (Norwegian Hardangerbana, Hardangerbanen or Eidebanen ) was a 27.5 km long electrified Norwegian railway line from Voss to Eide ( station Granvin ) on Granvinfjord in Hardanger skirted.

History

The decision to build the track was in 1919 in the Storting. It was only opened on March 30, 1935. During construction, the work was stopped because Labour Minister Worm Hirsch Darre - Jenssen was convinced that the route could be better operated by car as by train. The regional parliament of Hordaland subscribed to this belief, but was overruled by the Storting.

The minimum curve radius was 180 meters, the largest slope 45 per thousand and the weight per meter of the rails was initially 25 kg. Later, tracks were used with a weight per meter of 30 kilograms.

Decommissioning and current state

Passenger services ended on June 1, 1985, freight traffic was maintained until 1 March 1989. On the part of UCB there was an attempt to revise the route and to continue to operate. For freight trains, however, the axle would need to be substantially increased. A potential tourist traffic similar to that on the Flåmsbana was discarded. Demolition work began on 10 December 1991.

The 3.39 km long stretch of Voss to the freight depot Palmafoss was obtained as a siding. Much of the former range was used as a pedestrian and bicycle path.
