For this reason, Roald Amundsen and his rival Robert Falcon Scott have prepared their polar expeditions here.

During the Second World War attempts were made in winter 1940/41 by the German occupation with great effort to set up an airfield on the Hardangerjøkul. This should test the idea of attacking the United States by air via Iceland and Greenland. These attempts were unsuccessful set since from 1941 the U.S. already established bases on Greenland.

The glacier was used as a filming location for the film The Empire Strikes Back 1980 for scenes on the ice planet Hoth, including a memorable battle in the snow.
